Juan's Vision for Elkin

The mayor’s position in Elkin has a limited role in governing the town.  The mayor chairs the monthly town commissioners meeting but only votes if there is an equal number of “yes” and “no” votes on a policy or recognition issue. The town manager oversees the day-to-day operations of Elkin and prepares policy recommendations for the town board.

The mayor’s primary role is to serve as a spokesman or ambassador on behalf of the Elkin community to businesses, other local, state, and federal governments.

My areas of focus will include:

Community Engagement

  • Continue to support Explore Elkin and Business growth in the area to provide jobs and opportunities for the population
  • Focus on additional Community Engagement activities
  • Establish an Elkin YouTube Station with channels for Town Council, School Board, Explore Elkin, Chat with the Mayor, plus Update the Calendar on the Town website to contain events of town governance.

Support Our Police and Fire Fighters

  • Work to increase pay for police officers and firefighters
  • Seek ways to expand police force and determine if we have enough Medical and Fire Personnel

Grow our business base

  • Support existing business growth with smart code-enforcement
  • Realistic and smart new business recruitment that fits Elkin and recruit business from the surrounding community
  • Improve infrastructure through grants from Appalachian Resource Commission

Engage existing and new developers regarding existing vacant buildings, new business opportunities, affordable and upscale housing

  • Roundtable discussion with developers and how they view Elkin for investment and growth
  • Work with existing key businesses regarding affordable and upscale housing
  • Develop market research of demographics, economic potential and determine right fit for retail growth in Elkin (home grown and regional/national)

Lead efforts to support our healthcare, education, and recreation assets in Elkin

  • Roundtable discussions with our hospital, school corporation and community college supporting future growth and related obstacles to growth over next 5 years
  • Roundtable discussions with Parks Department, Town, key individuals regarding tournaments/competition, future facilities, and related matters
  • Identify what the next steps are and seek funding partners to provide financial resources to support those next steps
